Abstract

A continuously evolving commercial training offering for industry professionals dating back to 2000 has given us a platform to develop and test many innovations in course and content delivery. With more than 800 courses for geoscientists and engineers, we instruct more than 14,000 technical experts each year in 11 core oil and gas industry disciplines—from characterization and exploration through development and production as well as in industry-leading software applications.

Novel training methods combine E&P software tools and workflows with domain education in a variety of fit for purpose learning environments from classroom to field locations for on-site geology field studies, and well site locations for integrated practical exposure to E&P practices and activities.

In the frame of our newest geoscience training transformation initiatives, the scope is to provide the best knowledge-sharing experience for users of all levels and different learning profiles. The training package is composed of distinct module components: main concepts, procedures, best practices, video guidance, and step-by-step workflows covering all the software platform domains, from the level of beginner users to scenario-based comprehensive challenge exercises for the advanced users. Challenges are tasks that open for multiple solutions and can be delivered in a workshop format where the class can work in groups. While the use of slides is less predominant, interactive and live software demos are a big component of the new training experience.

The entire course offering is modularized to allow users to build their own training. The strategy of course customization facilitates the adoption of multidisciplinary training workflows. This is an important element because it allows geoscientists and engineers from different disciplines to be part of the same training journey. This is equally true in the case of software trainings or in the case of discipline-based courses that may either include workflows within a single software platform or allow for a broader cross-software-platform learning experience.

Learning more effectively in a more enjoyable manner helps participants to rapidly develop and consolidate technical skills that can be immediately applied in their daily job to improve their company’s business.
