Abstract

Volcanic rocks are among the most texturally diverse rock types with large variations in mineralogy, grain size, grain shape, and a range of brittle and ductile deformation features. However, documenting and understanding different volcanic textures is critical to proper interpretation of volcanic processes. Advances in digital cameras, processing power, and 3D-rendering software now make it possible to generate and archive realistic, well-detailed, color 3D models of volcanic rock samples. Using Agisoft Metashape Pro, and a basic digital camera, and lighting set-up assembled for less than $100, we have developed a workflow for constructing 3D models that are then posted and shared on SketchFab.com and advertised on social media and the Volcanology and Petrology Lab's website. By taking approximately 150 - 200 photos per sample, an accurate 3D model of the sample's outer surfaces can be generated and then draped with a high-resolution, orthorectified color image. Once posted to SketchFab.com, the model can be annotated, specific viewpoints recorded, and shared. We are developing lesson materials at WVU to integrate these models into online homework and self-guided study assignments, and will develop materials suitable for middle and high school students.
