Abstract

Ocean circulation plays an important role in redistributing heat from the tropical to polar regions, thus influencing ocean temperature, weather, and climate. This AMS-developed activity for K-8 students focuses on creating a map model of ocean gyres by analyzing surface winds, currents, and Coriolis effect deflection. Knowledge is then transferred to build a global perspective of ocean circulation. Modifications and extensions will be provided for different learners and ages.
