Abstract

In early 2018 a mass wasting event occurred along the shoreline of Porcupine Bay, along the Spokane arm of Lake Roosevelt in eastern, WA. The landslide damaged the single route of access to a popular state campground incentivizing a swift effort to reestablish the road. We took this this opportunity to utilize small unmanned aerial vehicles (sUAV’s) to map the affected area. Combining aerial imagery, thermal images, three-dimensional models, and digital elevation models with geophysical and geological surface monitoring data we developed a subsurface model for the Porcupine Bay Road landslide. Using these data, we aim to gain further understanding of the failure surface of the slide, generate reproducible measurements for landslide classification and estimate total volume of mass wasted material. This project illustrates modern surveying techniques while adding to the collective knowledge of lacustrine sediments deposited by Pleistocene glacial lakes in the Lake Roosevelt area.
