Abstract

Main objective of this study is to compare the first geosciences research activities scientometric knowledge and GIS maps of Iran with GeoRef database. This work is based on surveying 8431 publications, including theses and dissertations (1967 to 2015) and journal articles (1991 to 2016) in two research domains (geology and mining). Analyzing the current collected data and comparing the prepared scientometric knowledge and GIS map with publications registered on GeoRef database shows insufficient research activities, as well as incorrect policies and unstandardized research activity formats across various geoscience field studies. On other hand, few decades ago, geoscience databases, such as GeoRef, have been established to provide a global platform for making geoscientific publications accessible, however they are not successful in demonstrating the science dynamics in this area. Based on achievements, it was concluded that it is required to develop International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO) Database based on GeoRef database and changing the current global scientific databases such as Scopus, Web of Sciences, and professional geoscience databases, such as GeoRef, around the world. The current available GeoRef database will provide IGEO with a great opportunity to redraw and change the future boundaries of geoscience. Also, it is suggested that IGEO calls stakeholders in the geoscientific field studies to consider and prepare geoscience education standards, guidelines, regulations, and alternative policies for performing geoscientific research activities within globally accepted and unified standard formats. It is furthermore suggested to increase research motivations and creativities among geoscientists, experts, and communities via developing web-based scientific research studies, and sharing knowledge and data within international and national projects, while considering professional and dynamic global network of scientific collaborations. Finally, development of the IGEO’s database will result in a significant growth in the number of geoscientific research activities and change long-term research strategies through beneficiary parties, like geological surveys, geoscience related organizations, universities, and policy-makers. In fact, understanding above mentioned problems and drawing the universal strategic map of research activities in geosciences will help us to make appropriate policies and decisions as well as to improve initiatives and creativity.
