Abstract

The effects of groundwater pumping in the Central Passaic River Basin, New Jersey over the last century were simulated using a 3-D regional groundwater flow model. The model was calibrated with the aid of existing field data at the site and an earlier numerical model of the site. The models show that groundwater levels have declined in response to pumping over the years. The declines are tied with the natural recharge-discharge behavior of regional groundwater flow systems. The models indicate that groundwater pumping has increased recharge and decreased discharge in the basin. Groundwater-fed wetlands have been reduced in size by the groundwater pumping. These findings will enhance groundwater management in the basin.
