Abstract

Remote environmental monitoring offers an opportunity to explore real-time data collection and extend the Internet of Things (IoT) to include scientific instrumentation. We present a workflow, system details, and outcome of a case in which gasoline vapors were reported in a commercial property in southwest Missouri. Onsite assessment revealed the vapors were sourced from a nearby gas station, where a fuel leak resulted in hydrocarbons entering a sewer line. Remediation was conducted by constructing a vapor extraction system connected to the sewer line. Due to the remote location of the site, ongoing operation, maintenance, & monitoring of the system could have been resource intensive. Therefore, the extraction system was equipped with telemetric controls to transmit data real-time via local cellular towers so that the system could be monitored and controlled remotely.
