Abstract

Given the complexity of cave systems, the mapping of cave features has typically been a challenge. Traditional cave mapping techniques represent the shape and layout of a cave well, but due to the nature of mapping a 3D environment, traditional techniques are limited in what can be displayed on a map. Our research explored the use of photogrammetry software and techniques in the context of cave mapping. Our cave mapping focuses on the creation of 3D models representative of cave features within Southwest Virginia. Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), handheld sensors, PIX4Dcatch software, and 3D modeling software, 3D terrain scans were collected from caves local to Southwest Virginia. These 3D terrain scans were used to produce high definition 3D models representing the inside of caves.
