Abstract

The Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) technique is widely used for site-specific geophysical characterizations. By analyzing ambient seismic vibrations and calculating the dominant frequency, HVSR offers valuable insights with various applications in geology, geological engineering, and other disciplines.

To facilitate efficient HVSR computations and visualizations, we introduce a Python-based open-source package designed for HVSR analysis. The toolkit features both a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) and a command-line interface (CLI), which make HVSR computations and visualizations straightforward for users at different levels. The toolkit may also be used directly in python as well. The streamlining of data analysis processes reduces the time and effort required from users.

Adhering to the SESAME project protocol, this package guarantees standardized HVSR analysis practices, ensuring reproducibility and comparability across studies. Its open-source data structure encourages transparency and collaboration among the many stakeholders that use HVSR data. Users can easily tailor and extend the functionalities to suit their specific needs and discover new insights.

This package is compatible with Raspberry Shake RS3D Seismometers, an affordable seismic sensing device. This has the potential to lower the costs and barriers associated with producing and processing HVSR datasets. The toolkit relies on well-established toolsets and procedures for reading, manipulating, and analyzing seismic data and for calculating HVSR curves. This allows seamless processing of all common geophysical data formats, promoting knowledge-sharing within and among scientific communities.

In summary, our Python-based HVSR package is a valuable tool for seismic site effects assessment, offering user-friendly interfaces, adherence to SESAME project protocols, and integration with established tools and code structures. By streamlining the data analysis process, this package can enhance seismic research, ultimately contributing to improved geophysical characterizations in the field of geology and geophysics.
