Abstract

Unraveling the true origin of an impact crater from the geologic record demands meticulous investigation and rigorous verification processes. This recounting of a remarkable 16-year journey undertaken by dedicated researchers who embarked on a quest to verify a suspected impact crater (MAPCIS), for resolving the fascinating complexities involved in the identification and confirmation of such geologic features. Utilizing a comprehensive approach, combining geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing techniques, the research team meticulously examined the purported impact site. This presentation highlights the diverse methodologies and cutting-edge technologies employed during this extensive investigation. The researchers meticulously analyzed geological ambiguities and shock metamorphism, mineralization, and other diagnostic features characteristic of impact events. This presentation also discusses the challenges and setbacks faced during the verification process, such as distinguishing impact signatures from terrestrial geological anomalies. Ultimately, the cumulative efforts of this multi-disciplinary team culminated in a conclusive determination regarding the authenticity of the suspected impact crater. Insights gained from this 16-year odyssey provide invaluable guidance to future researchers endeavoring to verify impact events and contribute to our understanding of Earth's history and the broader impact processes shaping the celestial bodies.
