Abstract

The increasing popularity, flexibility and utility of the commercial cloud has made the transition from campus-based infrastructure an attractive option for many research groups. This presentation details the set of tools that the Neotoma Paleoecology Database has used during its NSF CloudBank funded transition to the commercial cloud. Neotoma supports a database, several APIs, static websites and online manuals, as well as a number of periodic operations. Using Amazon's AWS services, Neotoma has been able to host the primary database, serve the APIs, a number of periodic services (DOI minting, data validation and database testing), and host static and dynamic webpages through the services.

This poster serves as a roadmap for other groups interested in migrating to the commercial cloud, and presents several of the challenges and potential long term advantages of making data resource services “cloud ready”.
