Abstract

The Mississippian Northview Formation is a clastic unit comprised of sandstone, siltstone, and mostly shale, acting as an aquiclude to the largest clean water reservoir in Missouri/Arkansas. The isopach's of the Northview Formation reveal that the thickest portion of the unit forms an east-west trend, which could be interpreted as an east-west trending fluvio-deltaic system. The source of the sediment that would feed this depositional system, however, is unclear. To investigate the provenance of clastic sediment within the Northview Formation, we present U-Pb geochronology of zircon and apatite from 8 samples throughout SW Missouri. Data will be presented to test the suitability of models that require sediment sourced from the east (Appalachian-Ouachita orogen) and west (Ancestral Rocky Mountain orogen). it's mostly shale.
