Abstract

The Ring of Cenotes (RC) extends along the ridge of Chicxulub crater formed at the K/P boundary. The cenotes, limestone aquifers, formed as a product of karsting diagenesis, long term sea level fluctuations and instantaneous hurricane storm surges. The aquifers demonstrate a fresh water lens underlain by salt water derived from southern the Gulf of Mexico. Explosive population growth in the Yucatan in Merida and Cancun use the cenote aquifer water as their primary water source. Previous studies of Perry et. al., (2011) suggest the groundwater chemistry is dominated by the dissolution of extensive gypsum/anhydrite bearing Paleogene age evaporites releasing sulphate and chloride ions. An existing groundwater model of Perez-Ceballo et al. (2021), suggest periods of low rainfall affects the fresh water layer.

A current study by Moeni-Perz et al. (2021) literature derived data yielded 173 cenotes of study of which 160 detected (92%) one or more classes of pollutants, including PAH's, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, fecal sterols, Fecal contamination studies (Ma et al., 2013) from Tulum region to the east, an area of significant population growth, indicate total coliform and E. coli fecal contamination impacting drinking water supply.

TGI Solar Power (TSPG) is currently constructing in the jungle an intelligent (AI) Smart City using a solar powered source, with 400 residences, 120 garden apartments, a high tech healthcare treatment facility, and other services on 400 hectares, Sotuta Yucatan, Mexico, 45 miles to the east of Merida, the regional capital. The property contains 9 cenotes a major asset from a resource and recreational perspective, and is located 40 miles from the Gulf.

The purpose of this presentation is to review our plans to manage the environmental concerns of water and CO2 management in the next generational Smart City of TGI Power. We will monitor the water chemistry carbonate buffer systems including the measurements of salinity, O2, pH, Ca+, Mg+, HCO3-, temperature, fecal, E coli, caffeine concentrations, fluid flow, and soil, The future geochemical aquifer system model will help in the remediations of local cenotes possibly using water purification decavitation or other solutions.
