Abstract

Flood events caused by heavy rainfall are challenging to predict in real-time and can cause significant socioeconomic impacts. Forecast systems able to predict floods in real-time at a spatial scale suitable for human action and enough lead time can enable timely preparedness and response actions. These forecast systems often depend on precipitation predictions from numerical weather forecast models to produce flood maps. This study assess the performance of inundation forecast maps generated from numerical simulations forced by precipitation forecasts prior the passage of Helene 2024 by Greenville, SC. The simulations are performed using a 2D hydrodynamic model and the inundation forecast performance is evaluated using high-water marks collected after the flood event.
