Abstract

As new construction and expansions of infrastructure are initiated in Appalachia, in many cases construction footprints encroach on landslide prone slopes. Recent highway expansion along US 52 in Mingo County, WV and new school construction in Lincoln County, WV, both involve extensive cut slopes and mass excavation in challenging geology. Final designs for both projects include pinned mesh and drape mesh systems, complementing conventional earthwork.

Our presentation will focus on right of way, mass excavation placement, and slope stability concerns that were addressed by the project teams through active design and construction phases.
