Abstract

The global energy transition is driving increased demand for critical metals such as copper (Cu), tellurium (Te), and platinum-group elements (PGE), with a projected Cu supply shortfall of at least 6 Mt by 2031. This deficit underscores the need to identify new Alkaline Cu–Au porphyry, particularly within underexplored geological settings. Cretaceous alkaline Cu–Au porphyry systems remain poorly documented in northeastern Mexico, and their petrogenesis and tectonic context are not well constrained. This study evaluates the El Milagro de Guadalupe (MGG) prospect as a previously unrecognized alkaline Cu–Au porphyry system.

Mineralogical, geochemical, and isotopic data indicate that the MGG intrusion comprises hornblende–clinopyroxene syenite–monzonite with elevated Ba and Sr contents, no Eu anomaly, enrichment in light rare earth elements, and depletion in heavy rare earth elements, Ti, P, and Nb. εNd(t) values between +1.0 and −1.6 suggest derivation from a metasomatized lithospheric mantle with minor continental crust assimilation, consistent with a high Ba–Sr alkaline magma. High Sr/Y ratios and abundant hornblende indicate a fertile, hydrated magmatic system. Potassic, propylitic, and advanced argillic alteration, together with fluid inclusion data, record extensive hydrothermal activity. Au–Cu mineralization with associated PGE anomalies and the presence of chalcopyrite, bornite, magnetite, and covellite indicate a complex, multi-stage mineralizing system. These results highlight the exploration potential of alkaline Cu–Au porphyry systems in northeastern Mexico.
