Abstract
The San Quintín Volcanic Field (SQVF), located along the western margin of the Baja California Peninsula, comprises 11 volcanic complexes dominated by cinder cones and shield volcanoes. Previous studies focused on the petrological and geochemical characteristics of lavas and ultramafic xenoliths, documenting an intraplate alkaline mafic affinity. The volcanic field is divided into northern and southern sectors; in this study, we analyze the volcanological evolution of the northern Woodford and Media Luna complexes. New detailed geological maps and stratigraphic relationships for both complexes shows that Media Luna (90 to 106 ky) covers an area of ~2 km2 has a total volume of ~0.02 km3. It consists of 11 stratigraphic units, including nine volcanic and two sedimentary ones. In contrast, the Woodford complex comprises three volcanoes Woodford (126 ky), Callado Internacional (84 ky) and Monte San Quintín (165 ky) which together cover an area of ~3 km2 with a total volume of ~0.02 km3. The complex consists of 13 units, 12 volcanic and one sedimentary. The volcanic products of both complexes are trachybasalts (composed of olivine, plagioclase, clinopyroxene, oxides and minor nepheline) with silica contents of 46.39 to 48.95 wt. %. A significant aspect of both Media Luna and Woodford complexes is the NE-SW alignment of volcanic edifices and the presence of collapse structures affecting their eastern flanks. The deposits associated with the collapses are characterized by discrete units containing rafted lava mounds and well-defined frontal scarps. The morphology of the collapsed craters and distribution of their deposits suggest that may be link to a common evolution associated to an unexposed fault.
