10 Undergraduate and Graduate Geoscience Student Showcase (Posters)

This is a hybrid oral-poster session. Presenters will submit one abstract for two presentations (3-minute lightning talk - morning, poster - afternoon). This will offer student presenters opportunities to practice a variety of science communication techniques. View the companion lightning talk session here.

Abstract

Archaeological geophysical methods are excellent approaches for locating areas to excavate, but they are ultimately meaningless without spatial context to substantiate the data they provide. In June 2025, students from Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) conducted a series of electrical resistivity surveys to identify potential archaeologically significant areas at Winnipeg Junction – a railroad boom town. This project interprets the electrical resistivity data gathered in 2025 and compares the anomalies with historical maps, meshing the rural landscape of the present with the railroad town of the past. This is accomplished by georeferencing the historical maps and resistivity data to satellite imagery, gathering a definite understanding of which buildings and middens were excavated.
