Abstract
Byrds Mill Spring (BMS) is an essential groundwater source for south central Oklahoma. The spring discharges from a dolomitic karst aquifer that exhibits characteristics of faulting and fracturing and is located at the base of an uplift. BMS functions as a stable underflow spring during baseflow and as a rhythmic spring varying in fluid electrical conductivity (EC) that is controlled by a siphon during extreme storm events. Using a 990-meter-long temporal electrical resistivity imaging (TERI) line, time-lapse monitoring data of deep aquifer recharge flowpaths near BMS were evaluated. Pairing these TERI datasets with EC, water level, precipitation and thermal data from nearby wells provided a deeper understanding of the complex system that drives recharge and discharge for BMS which will allow groundwater managers to make more informed decisions on water usage for the region.
