Abstract

The K-Pg boundary is one of the five mass extinction events in geologic history, and it marks the end of the Cretaceous and the beginning of the Paleogene. This boundary can be found in Northeastern Mississippi; however, it is primarily buried and few outcrops are visible. Construction being done along Mississippi State Highway 15 will carve out areas where the geology will be exposed, potentially giving better visual access to the K-Pg boundary. Part of this construction goes through the Blue Mountain and Ripley geological quadrangles (1:24,000 scale) which haven’t been completed. This project’s primary focus is on completing the two quadrangles to better analyze the area. Through collecting field data, using well logs, finding stream cuts and outcrops that show the formations, and using fossil analysis to determine the formations we will be able to finalize a more detailed map.
