Abstract

Over the past 25 years, Oklahoma’s STATEMAP program has produced more than 70 detailed geologic maps across the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metropolitan areas and the Ouachita front. These mapping efforts have greatly enhanced our understanding of bedrock geology, the distribution of Quaternary alluvial aquifers, industrial mineral resources, and problematic shrink-swell clay units that affect infrastructure development.

Recently, geologists from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma initiated a collaborative effort to reconcile differences in Pennsylvanian stratigraphic frameworks across state boundaries. This multi-state initiative has led to substantial revisions in the previously standardized stratigraphic section for Oklahoma, particularly within the Cherokee Platform province westward-dipping, shallow-shelf depositional environment composed of Desmoinesian through Missourian sedimentary rocks.

To support this effort, we propose 1:24,000-scale geologic mapping of the South Coffeyville and Hayrick Mound 7.5’ quadrangles, which include exposures of the Missourian Coffeyville and Seminole Formations (Skiatook Group), the Desmoinesian Lenapah through Fort Scott Formations (Marmaton Group), and the underlying Senora, Boggy, and Savanna Formations (Cabaniss and Krebs Groups). These maps will be accompanied by detailed lithofacies analyses, updated stratigraphic columns, and fully attributed GeMS compatible databases.

A critical gap in regional correlation lies in the limited chronostratigraphic resolution across state lines. We propose addressing this by integrating geochemical analyses and benthic foraminifera biostratigraphy, which offer precise tools for constraining depositional age and enhancing stratigraphic correlation. This integrated approach will provide a robust framework for refining Pennsylvanian stratigraphy across the Midcontinent
