136 Micro-Nano Scale Pore-Fracture Architecture and Fluid Dynamics in Shale and Coal Reservoirs
The exploration and development of shale and coal reservoirs are pivotal to modern unconventional fossil energy production. The intricate micro-nano scale pore-fracture architecture within these reservoirs significantly influences storage capacity, fluid occurrence, and migration dynamics.

Abstract
A comprehensive understanding of fluid–rock interactions involving water, oil, and gas is essential for optimizing shale oil primary production and enhancing oil recovery. Compared to conventional reservoirs, shale formations present significant challenges due to their low porosity, nano-Darcy-level permeability, and strong heterogeneity. This presentation addresses these challenges by investigating key controlling factors—such as pore network characteristics, wettability, and heterogeneity—using an integrated, multiscale approach. High-resolution imaging across core-to-pore scales is combined with laboratory measurements of permeability and relative permeability during water, CO₂, and oil displacement experiments. New insights into flow dynamics, wettability behavior, and fracture–matrix interactions in shale will be presented, with discussions on their implications for CO₂-enhanced oil recovery and carbon storage.
