57 Advances and Applications in Geochronology for Interpreting Stratigraphic and Basin Records, Part II

This session welcomes submissions related to applications of geochronology (e.g., U-Pb, 40Ar/39Ar) in stratigraphic research, including topics such as eruption and maximum depositional age estimation, provenance analysis, numerical modeling of geochronological data, and multi-disciplinary chronostratigraphic characterization.

Abstract

The Paleozoic bedrock of Alabama includes (1) weakly to undeformed sedimentary suites of the Cumberland Plateau, (2) folded and faulted, unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks of the Valley and Ridge province, and (3) greenschist and higher-grade metamorphic rocks of the Alabama Blue Ridge and Piedmont provinces. Using available maximum burial temperatures of sedimentary rocks, regional stratigraphic thicknesses, peak metamorphic condition estimates, integrated with new and published thermochronology and geochronology we present temperature-time maps for Ordovocian, Silurian-Devonian, Mississippian, and Pennsylvanian rocks in Alabama. Using these temperature-time maps, we create paleoelevation models for Alabama through the Paleozoic that highlight structural and stratigraphic inconsistencies requiring future field and analytical investigation. The details of our workflow will be provided to allow for construction of temperature-time and paleoelevation maps using any dataset.
