Abstract
The Geologic Mapping Program at the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology is completing a compilation geologic map of the Nevada portion of the Mesquite Lake 30x60 quadrangle, funded by the USGS Statemap program. The compilation project was conceptualized and initiated as the culmination of numerous geologic mapping projects (at various scales) in the area south of the Las Vegas metro area and includes new mapping as well as compilation of previously published information. A series of personnel departures have presented significant challenges to smooth completion of the project, while recent government turbulence precludes the option of no-cost extension. Our team has invited new external collaborators while incorporating the legacy NBMG field and GIS data from previous personnel into the final product. The success of this project demonstrates a strong legacy of internal data documentation and preservation, allowing successive handoff of the mapping project through the personnel turn-over. Final publication is anticipated by summer of 2026 and final authorship will include a robust list of contributors. The compiled map illustrates nearly 2 billion years of geologic history, with exposures of Paleoproterozoic gneisses and granites, Paleozoic marine and Mesozoic nonmarine sedimentary rocks, classic thrust faults associated with the late Jurassic to Cretaceous Sevier and Laramide orogenies, Miocene and younger volcanic and plutonic rocks and extensional and trans-tensional faults which have significantly extended and tilted regions up to ~90°, and extensive Quaternary basin-fill deposits.
