Abstract
Dunes pervade the surface of modern Earth and have been present throughout most of Earth’s history. Cross stratified sandstones, left by aeolian dunes, provide a rock record of paleo-dunes that can be interpreted to gain insight into ancient climate and sediment availability. In general, interpretations of paleo-aeolian strata rely on field measurements and insights that come from other ancient deposits or modern analogs. Here, we introduce a new model-based approach to aeolian stratigraphic interpretation. With the widely-used real-space cellular automaton laboratory we compare modeled and real-world aeolian stratigraphy, leveraging modeled strata into quantitative estimates of paleo-dune longevity and migration rate for example strata on Earth and Mars.
