Abstract

The Southern Granulite Terrain of India is one of the few terrains in the world that has preserved Archean crust with extensive granulites, believed to be of lower-crustal origin. The region is a mosaic of high-grade granulite massifs with shear zones in between. Such a terrain provides ample opportunity to understand the nature of the deep continental crust, as well as the geological processes involved in the formation and evolution of the area itself. A coincident deep seismic reflection and refraction/wide-angle reflection experiment was carried out, along a 300-km-long transect in the Southern Granulite Terrain (SGT). The aim of the study is to provide velocity structure from refraction/wide-angle reflection data, and a reflectivity pattern from reflection data. The transect covers important geological units and tectonic elements of the region.
