Abstract

The MS2 (where M is W or Mo) disulfides have a characteristic anisotropic 2H layered structure similar to graphite. Their compressibility and phase stability which closely related to the boding status are interesting. We performed high pressure x-ray diffraction measurement of WS2 and MoS2 using a diamond anvil cell and the synchrotron x-ray diffraction technique. We found that the c-direction of these sulfides were much more compressible than the a-direction. The MoS2 might also undergo an electronic phase transformation. We will present our comparison and discussion of their compressibility.
