Christopher I. and Irene N. Chalokwu Travel Grant

Eligibility
Applicants must meet all the following criteria:

  • Be a student (undergraduate, Master’s, or PhD).
  • Must reside in Africa.
  • African students applying for the Christopher I. and Irene N. Chalokwu Travel Grant can apply for the GSA International Travel Grant; however, will not be approved to receive both grants.
  • Have not previously received a GSA Christopher I. and Irene N. Chalokwu Travel Grant.
  • Commit to attending and presenting research at GSA Connects 2026, Denver, Colorado, USA.
  • Awardees may be required to provide proof of conference attendance.

Application Requirements

  • Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered.
  • Applicants do not need to be GSA members to apply; however, membership is strongly encouraged.
  • GSA members receive discounted meeting registration and access to additional professional benefits. Join or renew GSA membership
  • Applicants selected for funding must confirm acceptance of the award within the specified timeframe.
  • Applicants must submit a draft abstract at the time of application; however,funding is contingent upon official abstract acceptance of, and attendance at the GSA Connects 2026.

Use of Funds

  • Travel grants are intended to partially offset expenses related to meeting participation (e.g., airfare, lodging, registration , and may not cover all costs associated with attendance).

Selection Criteria
Applications are evaluated based on:

  • Scientific merit and clarity of the proposed research.
  • Relevance to the geosciences.

Additional Information

  • Award recipients will be formally recognized at the GSA International Reception and Awards Ceremony, held during GSA Connects 2026.
  • Visa Notice: Depending on your country of residence, a visa may be required to attend GSA Connects. Applicants are encouraged to review visa requirements early. Selection for the award does not guarantee visa approval. While the GSA is able to provide general visa guidance, and personalized invitation letters, the GSA does not issue visas, and is unable to influence visa approval in any way.
