Abstract

Sustainability challenges facing us in the present and future can only be solved by individuals with different viewpoints, expertise, and backgrounds that collaborate towards solutions. Broadening participation in the Earth sciences brings new perspectives to societal challenges involving sustainability and strengthens the future workforce. The InTeGrate STEP center supports faculty in bringing sustainability education to their institutions and includes successful strategies for broadening student participation. These ideas and approaches have been infused in the NAGT Traveling Workshops Program (TWP) sessions focused on departments’ ability to implement inclusive teaching practices and develop inclusive environments with the goal of increasing diversity in the geosciences.

TWP brings together leaders in geoscience education to design and facilitate workshops for departments and programs. Workshop leaders work with local hosts to customize programs for their needs. Supporting the Success of All Students (SSAS) is offered as a workshop component or as a main theme. SSAS workshop participants discuss their campus culture, who their students are, and identify strategies for expanding inclusive practices. The session helps develop a holistic approach to supporting students through community development and fostering students’ motivation and academic success.

Exercises lead participants towards supporting students through their entire evolution from entering a program to launching their next endeavor. Workshops conclude with participants making action items for individuals to make in the classroom and advising, and department items for building an inclusive program and culture. Among the broad array of workshop outcomes, participants valued the immediately adaptable ideas and long term strategies to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion.
